All people are eligible for PrEP, but PrEP is specifically beneficial for people who have engaged in anal or vaginal sex in the past six months, people with HIV+ partners, not constant condom use, has been diagnosed with an STI (sexually transmitted infection) in the past six months, or engages in injection drug use.
-How effective is PrEP? PrEP is highly effective for preventing HIV. PrEP reduces the risk of getting HIV from sex by about 99% when taken as prescribed.
-How can I pay for PrEP? Most insurance plans and state Medicaid programs cover PrEP (Missouri Medicaid does!). Under the Affordable Care Act, PrEP must be free under almost all health insurance plans. That means you can’t be charged for your PrEP medication or the clinic visits and lab tests you need to maintain your prescription. For those who are currently uninsured, APO provides free office visits and labs related to PrEP services via federal grant.
