Harm Reduction

What is Harm Reduction? Harm Reduction is many things. Anything that reduces harm to yourself, your friends, your parents or children, or anyone else is harm reduction. Harm Reduction is a set of actions, interventions, knowledge, and resources that can reduce the chance of someone getting hurt, especially from using drugs.

What does Harm Reduction Look Like?

Harm reduction includes:

  • Using NARCAN® or intramuscular naloxone to reverse an overdose from opioids
  • Not using drugs alone
  • Not sharing equipment if using drugs (injecting, snorting, or smoking)
  • Using condoms to reduce chances of acquiring STIs/STDs
  • Using PrEP to reduce chances of contracting HIV

There are many other ways to use harm reduction practices in your own life – just reach out to APO’s Harm Reduction Coordinator.
